TOUR BLOG: Katadreuffe in FNAC
The Amsterdam experimental noise rock band Katadreuffe has just released their latest album Malconfort. For KNiK they took the time to dig into their memories and photo archives to tell a tour story from a few years back of books, weight, glass doors and noise.
Katadreuffe hasn’t toured much (yet), so there isn’t much to tour-blog about. However, one of our weirdest shows ever was actually abroad, in the FNAC in Nantes, France, on Friday afternoon of October 29th, 2010.
It went something like this. We were asked to play the eighth edition of the Soy Festival in Nantes. In four days 21 bands were going to play. Among them were Liars, Bellini, Blank Dogs, Sun Araw, U.S. Girls, and us. Our show would take place on Saturday night October 30th and because we were headed in that direction anyway, we thought we could plan a small tour around that date. Unfortunately not every Belgian, Luxembourger or Frenchman that we asked was as favourable to us as Alex and Pierre of the Soy Festival organisation, so the small tour turned out to be only a long weekend.
That weekend started on Thursday October 28th in Espace B in Paris, where we were going to play a show with the British band Action Beat. We played for about 25 people, something we didn’t mind, however, Action Beat’s frontman was less satisfied since there were six or seven band members he had to feed and provide with sleeping places, and that was not going to have to happen with this small attendance. So Action Beat’s frontman phoned the absent promoter whose absent promotion was seen as the cause of the problem. The promoter was treated to a verbal version of Action Beat’s noise. Action Beat had no other option than to stay the night at a McDonald’s, while we slept reasonably comfortable in a Formule1 hotel.
The next day we were going to play at the FNAC in Nantes, and at night in Saint-Nazaire, a small coastal town near Nantes. That last show got cancelled because the night before there was a burglary in the squat where we were going to play. The P.A. and other equipment got stolen, which were later found at the local pawnshop, but unfortunately the police couldn’t be called because the squat itself was illegal too… something like that.
The show at FNAC, a French warehouse for books, CDs, DVDs, electronics, etc., was part of the Soy Festival. We had no clue if there really was a day program at the FNAC; maybe Alex and Pierre just pitied our short tour schedule and tried to help us make the tour something more than it was by adding another show, and so we had to show up at the warehouse. When we arrived there our equipment and us were directed to the second or third floor through an underground hallway system and a personnel elevator. This was the book section of FNAC, and via a hidden door in the art books section we could bring our instruments to a central reading room. We answered the first wondering looks with our own surprise when we saw the space with a small low stage and a few rows of seats on which people were quietly reading their books. Without disturbing these people, we tried to set up our equipment.

Katadreuffe plays OCCII on February 26th.
