(Punk is love)

When driving into Minsk, the view is exactly what you would expect from Belarus: concrete, grey landscapes, dusty Soviet monuments with red stars, hammer and sickle still sitting perkily in gold. And there, in front of countless rows of grey buildings, an enormous grotesque advertisement: “GREEN CITY” with a heavenly print of green pastures and waving trees. The only green I see for miles around is the advertisement itself.

Amidst all that grey we find the venue where we’ll play: ‘Restaurant Alekci’ it says on the facade. To the left of this sign there is a photo of a fifties gentleman who holds a steaming cup of coffee and smiles, while behind him a fifties lady is eating a pastry. Cosyness. From inside we see the reflections of chrome and disco lights. Outside hardcore kids are gathering. Who, by the way, look exactly the same as everywhere else in Europe. But that was to be expected.

When we were planning our Landverraad tour to Belarus and Russia, friends in bands already said that it would be great. Even though the repressive isolated Belarus, has a president who thinks that ‘it is better to be a dictator than gay’, it still boasts a blooming punk scene, with an enthusiastic audience.

landverraad minsk 3Still I wasn’t prepared for people getting wild from the first song on. They charged at Marina, our singer, to shout the lyrics along with her. It probably helps that some of our lyrics are in Russian – but still. The enthusiasm and the energy: laughing faces and shining eyes abounded.

Eyes that became serious when, between songs, we spoke to the audience. That wild, swirling crowd suddenly turned silent and attentive. I introduced a song DEPRESSION, which Marina translated. I say that I’m sure there are people present that night who know what depression feels like. The struggle, the vicious circles of your thoughts, the disquiet, how dark and desperate it all can feel. How isolated. And that it’s still important to just be. No matter how meaningless it may seem. Drinking tea with friends, taking somebody to a punk show. That those small things are so fucking important when all is dark. “And now, you can hug each other,” Marina concludes my introduction.

Then this happens. Cuddle punk. And it’s wonderful.

(Punk is liefde)

“And now, you can hug each other,” besluit Marina na mijn verhaal.

En dan gebeurt er dit. Knuffelpunk. En het is prachtig.
