PROTEST AS COUNTERPOWER
We plan on starting the year with continuity by reflecting on what it takes to keep protesting going in the Netherlands.
A mixed community night, including a panel discussion with local organisers, lawyers, and researchers on protest as counterpower.
18:30 doors / panel ~1hr / live dj sets all night long (23:00!)
Drinks, food, handbooks. Come as you are, bring a friend!
Sharing our first round of the panelists❕❕
As part of our Protest as Counterpower event, we’ll be moderating a discussion that brings together speakers from different backgrounds to share experiences and perspectives on navigating the legal, political, and social realities of protest.
Mr. Jelle Klaas is a human rights lawyer and the executive director of PILP, a nonprofit law firm that supports communities, movements, and activists in their fight for change and human rights. He is one of the founders of PILP and has years of experience in strategic litigation for human rights and the right to protest in the Netherlands.
We are excited to introduce our second speaker who will share their own experiences and work into protest: Medhat, a Palestinian from Gaza and activist for PGNL and Utrecht4Palestine.
Sumbal Bashir is a PhD researcher at the Institute of Social Studies, Erasmus University. Her research looks into hybrid feminist activism across digital and offline spaces within the context of Pakistan.
We are happy to introduce our final panelist for this Thursday’s discussion.
Anna Aretha Sach does research on why people engage in climate activism. She uses quantitative and qualitative methods in collaboration with activist groups to understand the drivers of collective action and how people feel when they engage in social movements.

Free entrance but donations are welcome!

@hommybird ‘s music dives headfirst into the kaleidoscopic psyche of its creator- vocalist and DJ Melle Homminga. “I come here to clear my mind” declares Homminga on ‘Hoofd in de Wolken’. The philosophy students’ tracks and DJ sets function as nostalgic snapshots, or rather as collages of late-night notes, voice memos and memories of a post-club sunrise

Let Us Speak was founded on the principle that, in order to lower the barriers to protesting, individuals should be equipped with the legal knowledge and community support needed to exercise their rights, particularly the right to protest. After noticing how the lack of clarity and reliable information prevented people from feeling empowered, we began organising workshops and legal trainings to create a space where people could connect, share their experiences, and develop the tools needed to protest safely and effectively. This work eventually culminated in the self-publication of our protest handbook, a concise resource that summarised essential legal rules and scenarios people could easily refer to. To make the handbook more accessible and more widely used, this event will feature the launch of our Dutch translation.
Presale/door prices adjusted: our events are set up by volunteers in favour of supporting DIY touring acts, but it is getting ever more risky to plan and book events – please support the community and buy your tickets early! Presale closes 18.00 on day of the show.
Bookings are closed for this event. Remainder of the tickets will be sold at the door
