TRiO MANDiLi

Georgian vocal folk female trio. Formed 2014 in Tbilisi.

Het succesvolle Trio Mandili, afkomstig uit Georgië, komt voor hun allereerste optreden in Nederland naar Doornroosje, Nijmegen op 21/11 om daarna nog vier optredens te doen in Nederland. Het drietal zingt liederen over vrede en begeleiden zichzelf op de chonguri, een driesnarig instrument lijkend op de Russische balalaika. Ze brengen hun teksten door nieuwe muziek te combineren met hun liefde voor de Georgische polyfone traditie in dialect.

De teksten van Trio Mandili benadrukken vrede. Helaas noodzakelijk, want Georgië weet maar al te goed wat oorlog met Rusland inhoudt. De stemmen van Mariam Kurasbediani, Tatuli Mgeladze en Tako Tsiklauri klinken alsof ze gezamenlijk één stem vormen. De passie, energie en muzikaliteit spat er vanaf en Trio Mandili toont de onmiskenbare liefde voor hun nationale muziek. De naam verwijst ook naar hun thuisland Georgië: Mandili is een Georgische sjaal die door vrouwen wordt gedragen.

Trio Mandili bereikt sinds 2014 een miljoenenpubliek via hun YouTube-sessies. Dat resulteerde in veel grote optredens in Oost-Europa. Het is dan ook erg bijzonder dat we ze voor hun eerste Nederlandse tour mogen verwelkomen in Onafhankelijk Cultureel Centrum InIt.

In 2014, three charming girls from Georgia “blew up” the World Wide Web and became stars. This “fairy tale” began on the day when three friends, during a walk in the village, decided to sing a song. Tatuli made a self- video and uploaded it to the Internet. This video dramatically changed the girls’ lives. Within two weeks the video was watched by a multi-million audience.

The popularity of Trio Mandili is growing every day. Today the group has about a million subscribers on Facebook. Fans from all over the world watch girls’ creations with interest on the “Trio Mandili” Facebook page. The name of the group was not chosen by accident. Mandili is a female headdress in the shape of a scarf. Traditionally, women threw a handkerchief to the ground when they wanted to reconcile the conflicting men.
