Art + activism

A presentation by Stefan Christoff and community gathering in Amsterdam.

For this event Stefan Christoff will share a presentation on organizing work at the intersections of art and activism across a number of campaigns in recent years. Stefan will particularly focus on current efforts to build support for a movement for housing as a human right in Quebec as community forces battle newly proposed legislation that attacks the rights of tenants to pass on leases through lease transfers. Stefan has been working on an effort called Artists together against Law 21. Also Stefan will highlight efforts throughout the peak of the pandemic lockdowns to support essential frontline workers within warehouses in Montreal, particularly Dollarama, through mobilizing artists to support the work of the Immigrant Workers Centre. Also Stefan will speak about efforts to build support within the arts for the Indigenous struggle against the Coastal GasLink Pipeline that is being imposed on the Wet’suwet’en people against their collective will. Finally Stefan will speak about the Musicians For Palestine that has focuses on building support for the Palestinian struggle for freedom within the arts, particularly within independent musician networks globally.

As part of this workshop Stefan will be hands on. Stefan will work with participants to cut out street lettering that expresses a collectively agreed upon slogan which addresses an issue of local concern.

Also this event will include space for local activist groups to table and share information and materials on the organizing work that they are undertaking, this includes Bond Precaire Woonvormen Amsterdam, BDS NL and the Prostitution Information Center (PIC) Amsterdam.
