Mokona (Templar Sound)
Combining the lush spaciousness of ambient music and field recordings with the angular roughness of grime and UK Funky, Mokona has carved out his own distinct sound on Australian Label Templar Sound through which he recently released his latest album ‘Love In Restricted Areas’. The producer and DJ with close ties to Youngstar, the artists of Night Slugs and other major influencers of forward thinking UK club music, presents a vision of dance music that’s heavy hitting, while leaving plenty of head space to vibe to.
LOOTUS (Estonia, Cudighi Records)
With his first label release, Lootus has polished a fistful of sonic cabochons. Influenced by the surreal and lurid sci-fi of J.G. Ballard, “Sounds From Vermilion Sands” playfully exposes the darkness lurking beneath idyllic fantasies and illusions. Picture synthetic jazz broadcast from a private resort in Palm Springs. There is a hall with rows of glossy monitors, all reflecting desktop backgrounds with rolling hills and perfectly sculpted clouds. On the path to the garden, the collective hum of mechanical mosquitoes enfolds you with a warm and menacing embrace. The staff has somehow taught the flowers in the garden how to sing.
