SOTU (Sounds of the Underground) is an annual alternative music festival in Amsterdam. SOTU has a passion for genre bending sound and performances – you can listen to noise, prog, folk, improv, rave, bass and electronics.
The main event takes place on Friday and Saturday (17 & 18 April) at venues Occii, Vondelbunker and Butcher’s Tears at the same time.
(the) Kurws formed in May 2008 as an unexpected result of a ping pong session. Since then they have pursued their own search, not so much in defined genres, but within the very foundations of rock, expression, and sound. It is a workshop where improvisation penetrates through composed material, a congealed form of the creation process. Armed with repetitions, recombinations, variations and contrasts, they frolic with memory and expectations. Post punk, krautrock, rock in opposition, funk, no wave – they present modes of playing, motives, and riffs we have heard time and time again in a totally different context, dissected from their original environment, placed side by side, used in a brand new manner, deconstructed and distilled.
Their debut album “Hole in the ghetto” was released in 2011 in Europe in a joint venture by Qulturap, Oficyna Biedota, Trująca Fala, and Blinded, and in the US by Bat Shit Records. The band has played numerous gigs throughout Europe and are faithful henchmen of DIY principles.
Depending on the circumstances, the band functions as a trio:
Dawid Bargenda (drums) + Hubert Kostkiewicz (guitar) + Kuba Majchrzak (bass)
Sheik Anorak is formerly a solo performance. It consists of a drumkit, a guitar and some effects pedals.
Especially loopers, as Sheik Anorak builds “songs” with several layers, parts and atmospheres…
These solo performances can go from regular indie rock songs to noisy and violent drums and guitar attacks.
Some tunes are written and some are improvised. It depends on the mood and several other things. And so are Sheik Anoraks’s recordings and releases.
“Week ep” is a no wave/noise recording while “Day 01” is somewhere between avant pop and noisy rock, and “[…] du coup”, a guitar experimentations recording.

Cyril M. is a french musician focused on improvisation, influenced by psychedelism, noise music and the underground scene of Japan.
Drummer in duet with Agathe Max and in Sathönay Loud Band, a psychedelic project led by Nico Poisson, and also guitarist in the power-trio Noyades with Vincent Cuny and Jessy Ensenat, he works to fully expand the sound palette of each instrument to get to a personal form of aesthetics.
Unstable and lively, between subtle minimmalism and raging noise, this expanded approach of the guitar emerges through intense gestures and manipulations that leads to electroacoustic fields, alongside with percussions and hypnotic harmonies.
Has already played with : Makoto Kawabata, Duane Pitre, Gaspar Claus, Onnyk, Lauren Rodz, Gilles Vignes, Dario Fariello…
