TOUR BLOG: Frafra class

I saw it for the first time in 2012 in a small bar in Metz, France. King Ayisoba and I were on a short tour through Europe, where he taught his audience the Frafra language during his show. He did that loudly, and he didn’t stop before the audience was also able to pronounce the words loudly.

King Ayisoba taught himself English when, thirteen years ago, he moved from the North of Ghana to Accra, the capital. Some of his songs are in English, but other songs are in the language of his birth region: Frafra. Which few people in Europe can understand. So King Ayisoba decided to teach his audience.

I’ve known King Ayisoba’s music since 2008. I was travelling through Ghana that year and heard him on the radio. At the time he had a number-1 hit called “I want to see your father”. In every cassette shop that I passed by, I bought the few cassettes by King Ayisoba that they had, and when back in The Netherlands, I passed them on to my friends. We played them for many years.

When I was in Ghana in 2012, I visited him, and invited him to go on tour with me. Zea, and King Ayisoba solo, double bill. We did ten shows in The Netherlands, France, Belgium, Germany and Switzerland. He enjoyed it, and asked if he could go on tour with me the next year, but then with his complete band, and if I could put out his album on “big cassette” (vinyl).

No sooner said than done, one year and about 1 million emails later, I booked a little over 40 shows, and most of those we would play with Ayisoba’s full band.

Those Frafra classes were part of every show. As a solo musician you look for contact with your audience. I do so too. Without other musicians on stage, you need that connection. Otherwise you become some kind of an empty screen on which people project their own interpretations. But even with his band he kept teaching those lessons.

The words that Ayisoba uses, are words that he often uses in his songs. Words that express important messages in Frafra, like: “we need love, we need peace, we need together”.

In Strassburg I filmed it:

TOURBLOG: Frafra leren

Hij had in die tijd een nummer-1-hit genaamd “I want to see you my father”.
