OISEAUX-TEMPÊTE
w/ Mondkopf & G.W. Sok

The music of improvisational collective Oiseaux-Tempete is bred from places in turmoil, be it Greece, Turkey or Lebanon. Oiseaux-Tempete embraces the freedom of improvisation, as well as the communal function of collaboration.
This is secular music that crosses boundaries and cultures, embodying an intersection where post-rock, jazz, Arabic music, punk and experimental electronic music find common ground and refuge.

Gonzo Circus #138 – April 2017:

OISEAUX-TEMPÊTE – Al-‘An (And Your Night Is Your Shadow – A Fairy Tale Piece of Land to Make Our Dreams)
Godspeed! You Black Emperor en Jerusalem In My Heart. “AL-‘AN” doet nadenken. (ks)

Difficult to comprise because your own references are too limited. The first comparisons in the head are too obvious. Godspeed! You Black Emperor and Jerusalem In My Heart. Perhaps they are the most obvious. Violins, epic build-up throughout the entire album, which explodes no sooner than in the title track, interspersed by Lebanese influences. The men worked at the blueprint in Beirut, surrounded by world-daring madness. Syria, Israel, Europe and the remains of a civil war. Even though you do not hear it, it is part of the place and the record. “AL-‘AN” is like a holiday diary. A collection of sketches and impressions, absorbing the environment in the sound. The desert and wilderness around, and how music brings everything into dialogue. The madness, the differences, the West and the Middle East. A political story that is also simply musically strong. Because the backbone of the record is one of hope and dreams. Because Beirut was once a scrub also and still is restorng itself. “AL-AN” makes you cogitate. But it also makes you yearn. For warm nights, watching the stars and daydreaming. A record that brings calmness. A perfectly balanced trip that can only be lent an ear to in one way. In its entirety and complete.

DIRAR KALASH

improviser, composer and multi-instrumentalist

Dirar Kalash (b. 1982, Palestine) is a sound artist whose work spans a wide range of sonic practices within a variety of compositional and improvisational contexts. His performative and compositional approaches to instruments, techniques, and aesthetics are highly political as they challenge dichotomies, hierarchies, and binary logics of new/old and west/east as tools of cultural imperialism and hegemony. The methods he uses are based upon his research into the intersections and relationships with other contexts such as language, architecture, mathematics, visual arts and further social and human sciences. His regular solo and collaborative performances include but are not limited to audio-visual performances, free jazz groups, string ensembles, solo piano, and live electronics. Dirar is also active as a visual artist, and has participated in many group exhibitions and art festivals in Palestine, Egypt and Europe.
