KETACORE Presents: KARNAVAL MET EEN K!
Karnaval is the name of a music style and cultural movement originated in the south of The Netherlands. The spelling of the word Karnaval is made to deliberately differentiate the musical style from that of Carnaval.
A complete history is made difficult by the underground nature of the movement, but a few facts are clear: In the early 2000s a group of young people gets more and more appalled by the increasingly commercial character of the Dutch Carnaval, and its lack of musical progress. As a DIY alternative, they start creating new music themselves, using computer software and cowbells. Still drawing inspiration from the hoempapa, they manage to incorporate elements from popular electronical music.
Karnaval sound systems form in loose collectives, frequently with anarchist philosophies. They rebel against the church's incorporation of the originally pagan Carnaval festivities. These sound systems join together to hold parties wherever a viable space can be found - typical locations include squatted old farms, bruine kroegen (brown pubs), fields and any other rural spaces. Because Karnaval parties are usually held illegally, this sometimes leads to clashes with the police, as was the case at both the 2004 and 2005 Oeteltek festivals.
Now for the first time in history, some of the originators of the Karnaval movement will come to the surface. Especially for you, they will play their music in one of the biggest commercial venues in Amsterdam, on a party organised by the leading dance promoters of The Netherlands.
History will be made. Don't miss it.

IN OK/OUT KO!
IAN NAGOSKI + THE FAMILY ELAN + REBETIKA (Andy Moor & Yannis Kyriakides)
Ian Nagoski will play and discuss a selection of tracks from the collection and relate stories of migration, the embryonic record pressing industry, cultural dispersal and interweaving – he’s delivered several such presentations in the US, where the musical mix of deep contemplation, utter tragedy, blazing jams and some hilarity has left deep impressions on his audiences.
Nagoski’s playback and discussion will be followed by the arrival on stage of The Family Elan, the ongoing project of renowned multi-instrumentalist Chris Hladowski, who you’ll also know from his work with A Hawk And A Hacksaw, Nalle and The One Ensemble.
Delving into the same mine of influence as To What Strange Place, and dipping musical toes in Uzbekistan, Eastern Europe and elsewhere, the current formation of The Family Elan as bouzouki/bass/percussion power trio has inspired involuntary dervishes in audiences across Europe on recent tour dates and will no doubt do the same on this tour.
”Comparisons with Harry Smith’s anthology or Revenant’s American Primitive are in order, not least because this is American music with a capital A, animated by the same feelings of desperation, nostalgia, the quest for cheap kicks and the agony of loss. Like Smith, Nagoski is a Walter Benjamin visionary, using his collection of 78s to hallucinate a history that actually happened but which remains hidden beneath official dogma and nationalisms.” -The Wire, August 2011
”I was entranced; I was FASCINATED. It is one of the most worthwhile purchases you will make this year. I went and got mine; I think you should, too.” - Henry Rollins, KCRW
“Ian Nagoski’s To What Strange Place is a work of great beauty.” - Jace Clayton / DJ/rupture, WFMU
“It feels as essential to an understanding of American music as anything else.” - Pitchfork

SINDRE BJERGA
has been touring the UK every October for the last 5 years, as well as mainland Europe and even Russia and the Ukraine, with his cassette player drones and kitchen sink psychedelia... Splattering collisions between grey and grey, beware of drone fumes seeping into your brains... Armed with an array of tape players, dictaphones and a pile of less-than-glamourous sound debris from the sonic junkyards, he tries to juxtapose and melt sound ghosts hidden deep in the molten magnetic tapes, sometimes force feeding them with sheets of feedback from dying amps, always aiming for that mind-altering head trip...
Sindre has been recording and playing over 70 concerts together with Jan Iversen as the Bjerga/Iversen duo.
Has released about 100 records, solo, duo and in other constellations on labels all over the known universe.
Lately most of his records have been live recordings from his many concerts and tours around Europe.
ANDREW PERRY
has had no idea what he’s been doing for a very long time. Distorted guitar, keyboard and voice in a democracy of the loudest. Has a past in UK drone metal troupe Sunshine Republic, as a well as a (un)healthy interest in most things fuzz and metal.. oh and Belgian beer..
Runs the small label with the great name "We're gonna get fucking drunk tonight boys"
ORPHAX
By the end of this month there will be a new release out by Orphax, his first proper CD called “De Tragedie van een Liedjesschrijver Zonder Woorden”. On the CD will be 6 new pieces mastered by Jos Smolders at EARLabs
STAPLERFAHRER
is the artistic moniker for Steffan de Turck, a Dutch sound artist from Tilburg in the Netherlands, who plays around with crunched and broken sounds, circuit bended gadgetry and electro-magnetic waves… and some weightlifting with powerbooks along the way.

SWIMMING CITY!
Zea (Amsterdam)
Release of new 7inch by Zea together with Xavier Charles on clarinet. Sounds like children songs, sirens and Ghanian funeral music. The unique Zea style with the wonderful clarinet parts of Xavier Charles.
Xavier Charles (Chalons en Champagne, France)
Birds and park sounds--faint voices, water maybe, calm traffic, softly rumbling engines are treated into held, subdued multiphonics: Xavier Charles always manages to wring something new out of his clarinet. Also known for playing very beautiful with The Ex and Getatchew Mekuria.
Smack Wizards (Glasgow, Schotland)
I saw a fantastic band at Nice n Sleazy in Glasgow last week, named Smack Wizards. What I loved about them was their completely uncompromising approach. They played a set of short instrumentals, guitar and bass overdriven to the max and feeding back but in a really controlled and beautiful way. Young (18ish?) 3 piece with brutal tribal beat female drummer, all sheepish grins and check shirts, watched by 12 friends. I have not seen a band that wrong footed me so much for years-even the alleged underground bands now are sickeningly tame.
Smack Wizards come from the Glasgow DIY music collective ?Winning Sperm Party? in Scotland.
Coma Stereo (Maribor, Slovenia)
Dark blend of live ambiental electronica and guitar driven songs. Takes inspiration from science fiction movies, early Pink Floyd, Sonic Youth and Tangerine Dream. Slavoj Zizek?s favorite backing band.
Oscar Jan Hoogland (Amsterdam)
Improviser, pianist, composer who is working actively in the field of both music and dance improvisation in Amsterdam with an itch to make music that cuts across genres, who does not take himself so seriously, but whose whimsical music has real bite and brainpower.
DJ Marcelle/Another Nice Mess (Amsterdam)
DJ Marcelle/Another Nice Mess is a resident DJ in amongst others Vienna, Hamburg and Berlin, but tonight the Amsterdam based DJ plays for the first time in a long time in her native country. Later this year she will release her third double vinyl album on the German Klangbad label, now she plays on three turntables (often simultaneously) vinyl from all over the world, from UK Funky to soukous, from cutting edge electronics to cumbia and from raw techno to feminist postpunk. `Marcelle transforms everyone´s idea of how to dance and feel great´ was written about her in New York. Let you take on a journey you couldn´t imagine that it existed!

BLURT
"PUPPETEERS OF THE WORLD UNITE" TOUR (PART ONE)
Ted Milton was a puppeteer before he founded BLURT. "Puppeteers Of The World, Unite!" was the first song he wrote & recorded - it was released by Factory Records on The Factory Quartet double album in 1980, then again the following year on the concert recording "Blurt In Berlin", & then reissued last year on the Fac Dance compilation...
Ted Milton will begin each show on this tour with a short "puppet" performance to introduce this song - BLURT will then play material from its earliest back catalogue right up to its most recent work - including the as-yet unreleased "Vous Etes Ici" written with Graham Lewis (Wire) - (the first performance of this song can be seen on utube under "Blurt At The Macbeth)...
